Our Story

Achievements

To date, we have been very active in advocating with the government. GISPA has played a leading role in promoting the development of Information and Communications Technologies in the country and in ensuring access to quality, affordable communication services for all Ghanaians.

Gispa has been involved in a number of initiatives in its efforts to influence government policy formulation and implementation, and in its position to provide industry guidance and reference in telecommunication matters.

Formation of GISPA first Internet Exchange Point, where currently 90 network operators are peering their local traffic—improving interconnect speeds and reducing bandwidth costs. This was set up with support from CISCO and UNESCO. Through the KIXP, Kenyans enjoy faster email transmission and website access from connected local ISPs. This initiative was globally applauded as Africa’s first exchange point outside of South Africa.

Ghana Internet eXchange

Drove to establish the Ghana Internet eXchange through the Ghana Internet eXchange Association (GIXA) in a new facility at the Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence.

VoIP Liberalization

Successfully negotiated to liberalize the VoIP industry, opening up new opportunities for telecommunications innovation.

SAT3 Price Reduction

Achieved a 40% reduction in SAT3 fibre prices for GISPA members, significantly improving affordability.

Dial-up Access Discount

Co-operated with the incumbent to introduce a 50% off system for dial-up Internet access.

Ongoing Projects

Negotiating bulk bandwidth purchases from SAT3 undersea fibre-optic cable and addressing professional conduct standards.

Legislative Guidance

Guiding legislative proposals to increase private sector investment in Ghana's communications industry through sector privatization and liberalization.
